Future emergency response tested with drones and 5G

24 Mar 2026Region Västerbotten has carried out tests using drones and 5G at Skellefteå Droneport to transmit situational awareness data from simulated accident sites. The results demonstrate how the technology can strengthen decision making during emergency response and lay the foundation for increased collaboration between public safety actors.
Over the course of two days, Region Västerbotten used Skellefteå Droneport to explore how drones can contribute to faster and more accurate response efforts. A simulated accident was staged near the test area, where drones were deployed to collect and transmit visual data via the 5G network. The tests are part of an EU funded project aimed at developing and evaluating how drones can be used to deliver real time situational awareness from accident sites.
Ambulance personnel participated on site alongside observers from the police and rescue services, all of whom share a common need for improved situational overview in the early stages of an operation.
“We are here to test modern technology, and drones are a technology that many are looking into. It is a great advantage that Skellefteå Droneport provides facilities and an accessible flight zone, making it possible to conduct real world testing. It saves a significant amount of time not having to apply for airspace permits from the Swedish Transport Agency, as this is already in place at Skellefteå Droneport. As an added benefit, we also have a 5G mast located close to the droneport,” says Mats Nordenback, Project Manager at Region Västerbotten.
Skellefteå Science City operates and develops the Skellefteå Droneport test environment through the Arctic Aviation Hub initiative, enabling this type of real world testing. The combination of accessible airspace, tailored infrastructure and reliable connectivity creates strong conditions for stakeholders to develop and validate new solutions. Both public sector organisations and companies can test technology here in ways that would otherwise be difficult to achieve.
“Access to aerial overview imagery is something that the region, police and rescue services all have a shared interest in. We hope this can lead to future collaborations where resources are shared instead of each actor relying on separate solutions,” Mats Nordenback continues.
The tests highlight how collaboration between different actors can lead to more efficient response efforts and better use of resources. A potential next step is to deepen the work and continue testing how visual data can be transmitted directly to emergency departments or crisis management teams. This creates opportunities to further strengthen preparedness and develop the connected public services of the future.
