When Skellefteå hosts Society Expo 2026 drone technology will be a natural part of the dialogue. Preparations at Skellefteå Droneport are now in full swing and an additional resource has been brought in to ensure that the site is filled with content showing how the technology can make a real difference.

In spring 2026 Skellefteå will host Society Expo where social development innovation and future solutions take center stage. Skellefteå Droneport will be an important venue for demonstrations, meetings and hands on examples of the possibilities of drone technology. To coordinate this work Ola Norman has joined the project as event coordinator.

In his role Ola is responsible for planning and delivering the events and activities connected to Skellefteå Droneport within the framework of Society Expo 2026. His task is to create a clear structure ahead of the expo period and to ensure that the content maintains a high level of quality when visitors and stakeholders are on site.

“My assignment is to make everything happening at the Droneport relevant, inspiring and well organized during Society Expo 2026,” says Ola Norman.

Bringing industry and authorities together

One of the main challenges of the assignment is to engage market actors to participate and showcase their solutions. It is particularly important to involve public authorities that work with drones in their operations such as the Police, the Armed Forces and other societal actors.

“It is about showing that Skellefteå is a serious and long term platform for drone development and collaboration,” says Ola.

For Ola it is also essential to highlight Skellefteå’s role as a bold and driving force in new technology. During Society Expo 2026 he wants to demonstrate that the city is not only following development, but actively investing and creating the conditions needed for future solutions.

“Drones are no longer the future. They are already part of society’s infrastructure and will become even more important going forward,” says Ola Norman.

A test environment for the future of airborne transport

Ola Norman has a long background in drone operations. He has worked with drones in many different environments and setups ranging from underwater drones and ground based systems to airborne drones, which he has worked with since 2003. Between 2020 and 2025 he served as head of drone operations at SVA, the National Veterinary Institute, which has given him deep knowledge of technology regulations and practical application.

“Drones will play a crucial role in crisis preparedness and total defense, for example in surveillance and search operations during accidents and extreme situations. Skellefteå Droneport is a unique test environment where the future of airborne transport is taking shape in practice,” he says.

Society Expo 2026 will take place in Skellefteå from 27 May to 9 June and Skellefteå Droneport will be one of the signature projects highlighted during the event.
