About Arctic Aviation Hub

Arctic Aviation Hub wants to accelerate the future of sustainable aviation by driving innovation and collaboration. With a focus on battery- and hydrogen electric aircraft, drones, and supporting infrastructure, the hub positions Skellefteå as a leading centre for electrified aviation development in Sweden and beyond. Arctic Aviation Hub can offer infrastructure at the airport, at the droneport and at Campus in the city centre. Skellefteå is also a frontrunner regarding Sustainable Aviation Fuel. Skellefteå Kraft, together with SkyNRG, is planning a large-scale production facility for eSAF in Skellefteå.

Thanks to the 1MW power supply at airside and the strong focus on innovation, sustainability and cooperation, Skellefteå Airport became the operational base of Green Flight Academy. The airport is top 3 in the world regarding take off and landings with electric aircraft. The competence and infrastructure in Skellefteå means that the region is very well prepared to be a hub for commercial introduction of electrified airborne vehicles and sustainable aviation solutions to the benefit of society and its citizens and companies.

Arctic Aviation Hub

The development program was launched as the ELIS Program in 2021 to help speed up the way to commercialization of battery- and hydrogen electric aircraft, eVTOLs, drones and supporting infrastructure. It is also a regional ambition to become an early adopter of electric aviation and a leading hub in the research and development of electrified aviation in Sweden and beyond. The best way to innovate and push boundaries forward is to collaborate and work together in partnerships.

Arctic Aviation Hub is initiating and facilitating a project portfolio with a number of public, private and academic partners. The main focus is on infrastructure, competence and the network that can be offered in Skellefteå as well as the possibilities to do winter testing and stress test airborne vehicles and ground infrastructure in cold and harsh weather conditions.

Arctic Aviation Hub is coordinated by Skellefteå Science City and has base funding from Skellefteå Airport, Skellefteå Municipality and Skellefteå Kraft.

Green Flight Academy

Green Flight Academy offers one of the world’s only airline pilot training programs that includes electric flight hours in the training for commercial pilots. Located in Skellefteå, the academy benefits from the region’s focus on green transition and innovative projects.

Theoretical training takes place at Skellefteå Campus, allowing students to interact with peers from various fields.
Flight training is conducted at Skellefteå Airport, which features modern infrastructure designed to support electric aviation.

The academy attracts pilot students from over 15 countries, creating a diverse learning environment and after graduation they can begin their careers as first officers with airlines across Europe.
