20 Aug 2026The new project will explore how drones could be used to transport smaller parcels quickly and efficiently, including to places where conventional delivery services are less accessible.
In the project, Arctic Aviation Hub and Skellefteå Science City will explore how such a solution could work in practice. By developing and testing an automated platform for drone deliveries, the project aims to build knowledge about what is needed to enable safe and reliable parcel deliveries by drone in the future.
In the longer term, the technology could improve access to services for people and businesses in rural areas, make transport more efficient and reduce emissions. At the same time, the project will give local companies and other stakeholders opportunities to build expertise and explore new solutions in drone technology, logistics and infrastructure.
“A well functioning system could improve access to services in sparsely populated areas, reduce carbon dioxide emissions and at the same time create new opportunities for local stakeholders in technology, logistics and infrastructure,” says Peter Sundberg, Project Manager at Skellefteå Science City.
About the project
The project, “Autonomous Drone Delivery System in a Rural Area”, is run by Arctic Aviation Hub and Skellefteå Science City within the LEADER programme. It includes the development and construction of a small scale automated delivery platform, as well as technical integration and system testing.
The project is funded through Leader Skellefteå Älvdal and the EU Rural Development Fund.
