Skellefteå Droneport is now inaugurated!

11 Jun 2025

What started a few years ago as an idea on a post-it note has now become a reality. Skellefteå Droneport has been officially inaugurated as Sweden’s first urban drone airport.

“Here we stand today with a place that will serve as fertile ground for the technological development of the future. The timing is quite right, as drone development is progressing rapidly across the globe. We will make sure to create strong conditions and opportunities to harness that potential,” says Robert Lindberg, CEO of both Skellefteå Airport and Skellefteå Droneport.

A Festive Inauguration with a Focus on the Future

Around 90 people gathered to celebrate the inauguration. The day was filled with inspiration, technology, and confidence in the future. One speech followed another, and Kristina Jonsson Sundin, municipal director of Skellefteå Municipality, emphasized collaboration as the key:

“We are known for daring to try new things. We test, we innovate – and we do it gladly together with the business community, academia, our innovation company, and the municipality. Skellefteå Droneport is a brilliant example of what collaboration can lead to.”

The inauguration ceremony concluded with a ribbon cutting – with the scissors, naturally, delivered by a drone. The ribbon was cut by Per-Erik Morén from Skellefteå Airport, who has been a central figure in the construction process. The now-famous post-it note is framed and hanging on the wall in the Droneport office.

During the day, technology developers demonstrated their solutions, and a panel discussed the drone society of the future, with a particular focus on societal benefits and sustainability.

A Testbed with Global Reach

Skellefteå Droneport is more than just an airport – it is a test and development environment for tomorrow’s drone services. Here, companies and organizations can test and develop their technologies in real-world conditions. The facility offers, among other things:

  • Take-off and landing zones for drones

  • Indoor hangar for testing and storage

  • Office and conference spaces

  • 5G connectivity

The facility is built modularly with a focus on sustainability and reuse, making it both flexible and future-proof.

“Skellefteå Droneport is an important part of a larger international network. We contribute to the global development of drone technology, while also creating local solutions for real-world needs,” says Henrik Littorin, Program Manager for the Arctic Aviation Hub.

A Strategic Step Toward the Future

Skellefteå Droneport is a strategic initiative that strengthens the region’s innovation capacity, improves public services, and contributes to a more sustainable future through the development of drone technology.

“It’s incredibly exciting that we can now truly begin to use Skellefteå Droneport. There is great interest from a variety of actors. This is only the beginning of something very exciting,” concludes Henrik Littorin.

What’s Coming Up

Testing and Development Projects

  • Hydrogen-powered drones: Students from KTH are exploring the possibilities of using hydrogen as fuel for drones, including what adaptations are needed at the airport.

  • Logistics project with Vinnova: A project is testing how drones can be used for cargo transport. Test flights between Skellefteå and Norsjö are being carried out in collaboration with Bussgods.

  • Autonomous rural deliveries: A new project will test how drones can be used to automatically deliver goods in sparsely populated rural areas.

Education and Schools

  • Training drone operators: There are plans to offer on-site training programs in collaboration with external partners.

  • Drones in schools: Discussions are ongoing about introducing drone-related components into school subjects, where students could use the droneport as part of their education.

Support for Business and Innovation

  • Testing grants: Companies can receive up to SEK 50,000 in funding to test their technology at the droneport during September and October.

  • Applications with external partners: Three project applications have been submitted in which Skellefteå Droneport is proposed as the testing site.

Visibility and Future Vision

  • SE26 Flagship Project: Skellefteå Droneport will be one of the main projects featured at SE26 – an international expo on sustainable societal development, to be held in Skellefteå from May 27 to June 9, 2026.
