The ED5GE Developer Community project, led by RISE Research Institutes of Sweden AB, aims to strengthen Sweden’s position in future digital solutions and infrastructures. It focuses on integrating the benefits of edge computing, such as local data processing and reduced latency, with the speed and wide coverage of 5G networks. This synergy enables real-time data processing close to the source, crucial for applications like autonomous driving and industrial automation.

The project’s vision includes improving waste management, port logistics, public safety, smart cities, and agriculture to create smarter communities. It also aims to lower the threshold for developers to use 5G and edge computing, focusing on low-latency applications. Additionally, the project seeks to empower developers to leverage advanced technologies to support use cases at the four ED5GE testbed sites. Skellefteå is mainly focused at drone solutions.
The four testbeds, funded by the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF2) Digital Fund, are strategically designed to address key challenges:

  1. Recycling and Circular Economy – Exploring innovative approaches to waste management and sustainability.
  2. Rescue Operations and Public Safety – Enhancing emergency response and safety solutions.
  3. Traffic Monitoring and Road Conditions – Developing technologies for smarter transportation systems including drone applications.
  4. Autonomous Vehicles and Sustainable Agriculture – Supporting advancements in self-driving technologies and efficient farming practices.

Through these testbeds, a virtual developer community is being established, enabling collaboration among researchers, businesses, and the public sector to advance next-generation communication networks and cutting-edge digital applications. This initiative is expected to accelerate technological progress, benefiting both private and public sectors.
