Drone Cargo Handling at Skellefteå Droneport

The project aims to develop and showcase drone transport operations and setting the foundation for scalable, sustainable drone logistics.

Project start

2023

Budget

4,6 MSEK

Project end

2025

The project focuses on developing drone transport operations based at Skellefteå Droneport to address existing and emerging logistics demands. This system demonstrator will integrate multiple dimensions, including technology, logistics, regulations, social dialogue, business models, sustainability, and operational excellence. Katla Aero serves as the project coordinator, supported by Skellefteå Airport, Skanska, and VTI.

The project will establish drone corridors, test mid-range drone deliveries (up to 15 kg payloads and 200 km range), and develop ground infrastructure at the droneport to handle logistics efficiently under all weather conditions. The initiative is expected to accelerate the implementation of drone logistics, particularly for middle-mile deliveries, while exploring their environmental and economic advantages. It also aims to foster public acceptance and investigate scalable solutions that could benefit other regions in Sweden.
